Coronavirus tax relief plan

Since the beginning of the pandemic, people and companies have seen their economic situation affected. The actions by the Government and the Treasury Department did not take long, dictating a series of measures to alleviate the difficulties.

These measures include the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, issued in March 2021. This includes a third round of payments to alleviate the economic impact produced by the pandemic.

Since then the next installment of the IRS stimulus check, which is added to the previous two.

In addition to economic stimulus, the tax relief plan included other measures such as changing the deadlines for taxes. As well as tax credits to employers who have been affected by the coronavirus.

The latter include the employee retention credit and family or sick leave credit.

Apart from these, the secret stimulus check is also being delivered, which is intended for homeowners who had problems with paying mortgages. The delivery of a fourth stimulus check is also evaluated.

Finally, two other plans are under study: the "American Jobs Plan" and the "American Families Plan.

How to track your stimulus check?

This time we focus on the stimulus check. The third round of payments began in March and is being done in stages, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

If you qualify for payment and the check has not yet arrived, it is possible to find out what status it is in. For this, the IRS has the tool Get my payment which you can access through the section Get my payment that you find on the IRS website.

If you're wondering what to do to get my stimulus payment, all you have to do is file your taxes. The IRS uses this information to calculate your amount.

To access the free tool and verify the status of the stimulus check, you need your Social Security Number, postal address (it must be the one that appears on the return) and date of birth.

How to use Get My Payment?

Once you enter the tool, the IRS indicates that you will find one of the following messages:

  • Payment status. If when you enter you see this message it means that the payment has been scheduled and you will be able to see the date it will be sent. In the event that the date is not displayed, it means that you are eligible, but it has not been processed yet.
  • Your payment status is not available. This appears if you are not eligible for the payment or if it has not yet been processed. The IRS explains that any U.S. citizen or resident alien is eligible if they have an SSN, are not listed as a dependent of another taxpayer on 2020 tax returns, and their gross income does not exceed established amounts. On the other hand, the status can change, so you should keep an eye out for updates.
  • We need more informationIt is shown in two circumstances. The first when the return was processed, but the payment has not yet been issued because the IRS does not have bank account information. The second case is when the payment was sent, but the postal service returned it to the IRS.

The information in Get My Payment is updated every day, usually overnight.

If the system indicates that you need more information, you must add your account information and routing number so that it can be done by direct deposit. If you already have a registered bank account, you will not be able to add a new one.

Another alternative to receive payment is through a prepaid debit card.

Track payment

While the Get My Payment tool allows you to check the status of the payment, there are cases where it is necessary to track it. For example, what if the check was sent and you never received it.

In that circumstance you will ask yourself how to track my stimulus check.

If the IRS informed you that the payment was sent or in Get My Payment it says that the check was issued and you did not receive it, you should contact the IRS.

There are two ways to do it:

  • Call the IRS number 800-919-9835 by phone.
  • Submit Form 3911 by mail or fax.

It should be noted that if you made a joint tax return, you cannot opt for the automated system.

If you have more questions about how to track your stimulus check, contact the IRS. With this information, you already have a clearer idea of how to know the status of your stimulus check.
