Americans lose billions of dollars each year to scams and fraud. The best way to protect yourself from becoming a victim is to know what to expect and report scams and fraud. Here are some common types of scams and fraud you should be aware of:

1. Identity theft

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information, such as your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.

2 Phishing

Phishing is a type of online identity theft that occurs when scammers use fraudulent emails or websites to trick you into revealing personal information, such as your bank account numbers, passwords, or credit card numbers.

3. Investment Fraud

Investment fraud occurs when someone uses false information to convince you to invest money in a stock, commodity, or other investment.

4. Internet auction fraud

Internet auction fraud occurs when someone uses an online auction site to defraud buyers or sellers.

5. Nigerian scams

They are offers of easy money for a little or personal information in advance. These scams originated in Nigeria but now exist all over the world, especially on the Internet.

6. Charity scams

7. Work at home scams

Work-at-home scams are attempts to trick you into paying money for products and services that you can never get back or make a profit on. Never pay anyone who contacts you unsolicited with a work at home income opportunity offer.

8. Sweepstakes/prize scams

Sweepstakes and prize scams occur when someone asks for money up front before sending a prize that doesn't exist, is fake, or has already been won by someone else.

10. Email Hacking

Email hacking is a type of online identity theft that occurs when fraudsters gain access to your email account and use it to commit fraud or other crimes.

Fraudulent websites

Report scams and fraud

The best way to protect yourself from scams and fraud is to know what to expect. Know who you are dealing with and do not give out personal or financial information unless you are sure it is secure. When in doubt, throw it away - delete, hang up or just walk away.

There are many other types of scams and fraud, so it's important to be aware of them. Be sure to do your research before giving out any personal or financial information. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam or fraud, contact your local law enforcement.

How can I report a website?

If you think you've found a fraudulent website, you can report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can also report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which is a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center.

Also, many local law enforcement agencies have cybercrime units that can help you report and investigate fraudulent websites. Finally, you can also contact your Internet Service Provider to report a suspected phishing or scam website.

If you think you have been the victim of a scam or fraud, report it to the proper authorities

You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ftc.gov/complaint. By reporting scams and fraud, you can help protect yourself and others from becoming victims.
